say God/Allah/Buddha/Joe the Alien Space Bat comes to you and says you can pick any one (who is living and could be President) to become the President of the USA starting right now, who do you pick and why

my top picks:
Senator Bernie Sanders- a wild haired Jewish Socialist from the New-east, sounds like me
Senator Al Franken- some laughs out of the White House would nice
Representative Anthony Weiner- I like his politics, and a name like that is hard not to like

Nice serious thread here.

I think Al Franken is a pretty solid choice. People who have been following him or have at least listened to him know the kind of collected, intelligent demeanor he has and his ability to bring reason to a situation.

Quite frankly, I want Ron Paul to be president the most. He's got the right ideas, in respect to personal and economoc liberty. However, in the name of practicality, I would have Mitt Romney. He's a man with a plan.

Romney is an escapee from the wax museum. There are better Republicans.

Agreed, MenInTights, but they are few and far between. Many of the better Republicans probably don't have a feasable chance at the nomination, and even if they have a feasable chance at the nomination, they probably won't muster enough support to defeat whoever will be the Democratic nominee in 2012 (It might not be Obama.). For the sake of practicality, I chose Romney.

I'm with the OP on Bernie Sanders. Second choice would be Senator Carl Levin.

You're right the field of good candidates is few and far between. I will devote every non-working, non-sleeping hour I have to help Jim DeMint get elected if he runs. I kid around about Obama's poll numbers being the the toilet, but everyone agrees the guy can run a campaign.

I like Ralph Nader, but I don't think he's ever going to run again. We need a president who isn't Republican or Democrat.

I would like Tom McClintock (CA congressman). I don't think he'll ever run though.

Jim DeMint is another Republican with both ideas and gravitas, but he is really a political unknown outside of South Carolina. Fortunately, that is starting to change. Hopefully, he will become fully respected on a national scale.

Agreed, but in order for that to happen, a GROUP of MAJOR and HIGHLY RESPECTED politicians are going to have to for their own party to accomplish such a Herculean task.

He's also good, but he doesn't have charisma. If he ran for Governor of California in 2014 (That is, if I don't run!), I'd vote for him.
