This is pretty weird, but if she was careful it might not have been too bad of an idea. She probably wasn't employed, since not too many employers allow you to miss over a month. The one issue I would worry about is having a criminal record on any job applications, although a lot of employers don't actually check, and she could possibly just explain it.

While I would love to stop smoking, even the electronic cigarettes, don't think I would want to go to jail to do it. If it helped her quit it might of been worth it to her though.
