The Official St. Louis Cardinals vs Milwaukee Brewers thread 40/08/06

Okay here's my preview of today's game 1.

Pitching matchup
MIL: LHP Doug Davis (6-6, 5.02 ERA)
Davis' ERA has moved back above 5.00 over his last three starts, during which he has surrendered 13 earned runs in 17 1/3 innings but is 1-0. The Brewers are 13-10 in his 23 starts despite some unusually uneven performances.

STL: RHP Chris Carpenter (10-5, 2.93 ERA)
Sometimes even the Cy Young winner doesn't have it, and that was the case in Carpenter's last start. It's very rare, however, that Carpenter struggles in two straight games. He's been absolutely brilliant at home this year, though he's had some trouble in his career with Milwaukee (5.17 ERA).

Player to watch
New Brewers third baseman David Bell has a truly bizarre -- but ultimately effective -- line against Carpenter. Bell is 6-for-18, a solid .333 batting average, against Carpenter, with a remarkable 11 walks. He's reached base in nearly 60 percent of his career plate appearances against Carpenter, who has some of the best control in the league.

Doug Davis hasn't looked very good in any of the starts I've seen him in, he usually gives up a lot of runs in early innings.
