Boston Globe - Paul Pierce, Vince Carter of the NBA, Marvin Harrison, Edgerinn James and Daunte Culpepper of the NFL and Carl Pavano of the MLB are just some of the most notable professional athletes who have registered guns, according to players and a Boston Globe review of concealed weapon permits.

"I would say about 90 percent of players in the league have guns to protect themselves," said New England Patriots receiver Jabar Gaffney, who holds a Texas license to carry a concealed weapon.

In the NBA, the figure "is closer to 100 percent than it is to 50 [percent]," said a team official who requested anonymity.

Pierce purchased a firearm shortly after he was nearly fatally stabbed in the Theater District of Boston.
