Sleazy Lawyers

We've all heard the story:

Stupid Cop A touched Exhibited Evidence B without following Proper Protocol 53. Because the evidence has been "tampered with", Child Mass-Murderer C gets off scot-free.

I know the analogy is a little off, but you know exactly what I mean --> Is it right that criminals can get away with --insert crime--, just because some crappy lawyer found out that --insert investigator-- "didn't follow protocol to a tee", essentially getting them off on a technicality?

I think trials should be decided by nothing more than physical evidence; especially in this day and age of technology.
