Ron Paul surges among Repub elites

Lion Rampant
At the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans today, hopeful Ron Paul won the presidential straw poll easily, beating out a number of his rival contenders for the 2012 GOP nomination. Paul got 612 votes, fellow Mormon Jon Huntsman 382, Michele Bachmann took 191, Herman Cain 104, Newt Gingrich 69 (please, no jokes), Sarah Palin a surprisingly low 41, and poor Tim Pawlenty got 18 nods and his name spelled wrong by CBS News.

Do these numbers surprise you? Why do they differ so significantly from the Romney/Palin/Cain domination of very recent polls? For me, the turbulence paints a picture of an organization in distress. In the backs of all minds, the question lies unsettled: how can the Tea Party fracture be good, if it threatens to cut the actual party in half?
