Realistically colored historical photos

That's really amazing to look at. I am not going to comment on any specific photo, I just wanted to comment on the technique used to interpolate between all of the subtle shades of gray - wonder how it works? Can anybody give us any more information or lead us to a website that explains it in some more detail?

It's probably lots and lots of hours in Photoshop on top of tons of research into the real colors that would have been around at the time. We still have the clothes, trees haven't changed much in 100 years, and so on. The artist is clearly talented.
