    Bias and bigotry in academia

Quote: Writes Nieli, there seems an unwritten admissions rule at America's elite schools: "Poor Whites Need Not Apply."

Is this the equality of opportunity belief that we share? Or is it just prejudice and racism as a "solution" to prejudice and racism?

Do two wrongs now make it right? What do you think?

It may have been in Freakonomics, but I read somewhere how these quotas where harming the people they were intending to help. So, a black student gets 1300 on the SAT and qualifies for Duke. But instead, Harvard courts. He ends up failing out of changing to a less profitable major because he's not qualified enough. Had he gone to Duke, he would have finished in the major of his choosing.

In the end, you end up with overt racism and unintentional racism all to make the people that run the program feel good about themselves.
