[poetry]Writing on Shoes

Bishop's Bog's floating bridge (it's all swamp
down this stretch of Westnedge, and when it rains
it pours out into the roads and yards of this suburban
corner of Portage) soaked her Vans© and white socks.

At the corner of Oakland and Romence, across the street
from Chapel Hill United Methodist, someone had nailed
two boards to a tree--JESUS SAVES--and they got the SAVES
but not the JESUS, and it sat in the back of the blue Buick
Regal that summer.

The clock store across from the Portage Central Administration
Building had a changeable letter sign--CLOCKS NEW AND USED--
and she got the L. Nobody noticed for weeks.

A tire swing, a yard deer made of twigs, and assorted trinkets
from stores. They smoked in secret in a subdivision off Portage
under construction, and now it's constructed and the young families
living there have kids on the streets stealing things and smoking
in secret in parking lots and basements and subdivisions under
construction.

They laid on the hood of the Regal and stared at the sky. Today
it looks like rain, and the birds are singing outside.
