Internet Addiction

Back when my internet was out for almost a week it drove me nuts not being able to come on here. It made me think about this article I read a few weeks ago on internet addiction. I have to admit I thought it was bull but now I am wondering. I know there are people that can't go one day without looking at porn for hours, that is considered an addiction. I always thought of addiction as can't go without your alcohol or pills, etc.

Do you think its a real addiction? Does it bother you not to be able to go on the net?

Here is a link for a internet addiction test if you are interested.

I don't think anything can be an addiction, it's just a habit, drugs, alcohol and all that.

I don't know how can people be so addicted to the internet, everything is so boring now. I do have a habit of checking all the same websites and that's it. I am finished for the day. I go on again if I am bored or have spare time. It's not the contestant 6+ hours per day anymore.

Actually, the opposite is true. Almost anything enjoyable can be addictive. When we experience something pleasurable, the brain experiences chemical changes that under certain conditions can be addictive. Also, some substances have their own chemicals that are shown to create dependency in the human brain.

hell yes!!! It's an addiction. At least for me it is. I go crazy if I don't use it at least 2-3 times a day. And if there's no connection at home I make sure to go to an internet center downstairs or access it with through 3G connection on my mobile.
I don't know how people could live without internet in the past. I used to do without it, now I can't.

Not being able to go online frustrates and annoys me, but except under certain circumstances (like having to do an online test, or get papers for a class from the VLE by a certain time), it doesn't break my world apart. I get more irritable about the internet not working than I do about not being able to go on at all.

Like, if I'm in the middle of nowhere with no phone signal and no laptop, camping or whatever, I don't really miss it at all. But if I'm at home with my PC and the connection cuts out on me, that wireless mouse should fear for its life because if it don't fix itself damn skippy things are going to start getting thrown at the wall.

(Disclaimer: No mice are harmed in the course of my internet use.)

So I dunno. I don't think I'm addicted, but I can definitely see how people could be. And for all I know, I just haven't admitted I have a problem yet... ;P

I did the test and I scored a 30.

20 - 49 points: You are an average on-line user. You may surf the Web a bit too long at times, but you have control over your usage.

I'll admit, I'm addicted to the Internet. I spend a lot of time on it, mostly on GF though. Some days, I'll spend about 12 hours on here, reading posts, writing some or just pressing refresh. But I will not miss a night out to spend time on GF, and most of the people that know me here can attest to that.

Alex, anything can be addicted. Some things are chemical addictions, such as cigs, but mental addictions, habits that just can't be stopped. Not to mention what wade said. It's why I laugh at people who say people can't be addicted to pot.

My parents used to think I was addicted, but since maybe my senior year? I haven't been on like I used to. I used to stay up until 3 AM online. While I can still have a late night on there, they aren't as frequent. In fact, I spent maybe 40 minutes on my computer yesterday.

I'm sort of addicted to the internet, but sort of not at the same time. When I am able to go on the internet I am addicted to it, I spend WAY too much time online, I waste hours and hours each day.

Yet when I am without the internet, saying going camping, staying somewhere without net, travelling etc I am absolutely fine. When I have internet I can't get off it, but when I don't have any access it's not like i go crazy wishing I could use it. I don't even miss it at all really.

I clicked the link in the OP six times and only got "server not found". So I googled a test that would load. This is the results from the 20 questions they had.

Your internet addiction level is 31% Your score doesn't show any addiction to the internet. You might love technology, or at least you might be fascinated by it, but you don't think it is absolutely essential. Your life would definitely flows on smoothly even without an internet connection! Write us if you enjoyed this test.
And this was the test (for anyone else who can't get the test in the OP to load).

I def agree with the results. I never get to know people very well on the internet and I have tons more friends in RL. I spent a week without internet after the ice storm disaster in 2007 and the only issues I had were re-charging the battery on my media-player so I could listen to music and not having a video game system that ran off batteries.

Even when I'm logged into a forum I'm mostly not even at my pc. I even logged onto a few forums once and left and didn't get home in time to use them, lol.

Also - very important - when we lose the wi-fi, I lose all my school sites. :D The wi-fi at my house is usually endangered. :p
