SPIKE TV AND TOTAL NONSTOP ACTION (TNA) WRESTLING RELAUNCH FLAGSHIP PROGRAM AS ‘IMPACT WRESTLING’

Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling and Spike TV announced today that TNA’s flagship program would be rebranded as IMPACT WRESTLING, beginning Thursday, May 19 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) on SPIKE.

With the debut of “TNA iMPACT!” in 2005, TNA and SPIKE have partnered to bring U.S. television audiences the most exciting professional wrestling in the world today. TNA iMPACT! has been averaging 1.8 million viewers this year and ranks among the top programs on cable with Men 18-34 and Men 18-49 in its timeslot. In 2011, TNA is up 11% in HH rating vs.Q1 2010 and 9% in viewership of persons 2+.

“While the name change is subtle, it is also very powerful. TNA is proud to be in the wrestling business, and not afraid to say it. And, to emphasize our commitment we have added the word ‘wrestling’ to our already well-known ‘iMPACT!’ brand,” said TNA chief marketing officer Al Ovadia.

In addition to rebranding IMPACT WRESTLING, TNA is launching the tagline, “WRESTLING MATTERS,” a statement that reflects every aspect of TNA Wrestling, from program content to marketing to live events.

“We wanted a branding initiative that was scalable and could extend across all platforms,” added Ovadia. “We asked our fans what it was about professional wrestling that they found most compelling. We learned it was no single aspect, their passion for wrestling was all-consuming. Whether it’s the in-ring action, backstage brawls, the feuds or classic dramatic conflict of good vs. evil, it’s the entire experience that makes ‘wrestling matter.’”

“TNA is a proven ratings winner on Thursday nights for Spike, delivering a consistently large audience of hard-to-reach young men,” said Brian J. Diamond, senior vice president, sports and specials, Spike TV. “We feel the new IMPACT WRESTLING branding message will resonate with our audience who crave the action-packed wrestling that only TNA can provide.”

Effective immediately fans can visit IMPACT WRESTLING - EVERY THURSDAY 9/8c ON SPIKE for exclusive news and content on the stars of IMPACT WRESTLING. Fans can also access over 300 hours of TNA programming at TNA On Demand - Pay-Per-View, iMPACT, DVD, TOUR & More TNA Wrestling Videos On Demand.
I expect for this week's show that Angle and Jarrett will start to begin the end of their feud, and we'll have them go one on one at Slammiversary. Should be entertaining.

Foley has more "changes" coming, I'm definitely interested in seeing what that means.

Anderson and Sting have had great chemistry, I'm really looking forward to a singles feud between them for the title. Part of me thinks that an Anderson heel turn could be in the picture; he's been a face for a while now but he's shown some of those heel characteristics in dealing with Stinger.

I'm excited to see what's next for the X-Divsion, as well. More of this angle of them vs. Bischoff would be awesome in my book, and I'm really curious as to who will face Kazarian at Slammiversary (if there's a title shot involved). Alex Shelley should get it, IMO.

I included the second part about Impact Wrestling in case anyone wants to continue that discussion...from the description above, it almost sounds like the show on Thursday will just be called Impact Wrestling and the company will remain TNA. It's a little cloudy at this point.

Haters gonna hate.
Why do I feel like nothing good will come out of the name change... and that shitty angles will be brought up that will run the company in the ground?

Just saying.

(Regardless, this show better be good!)

Any thoughts on specific angles/storys, Anderson vs. Sting, etc.?

I'm looking forward to the show, though...Even though it's not the biggest show of the year, Slammiversary is probably in TNA's top 3-4. Hopefully the PPV has a better-than-usual build to it.

I can't wait to see Joe vs. Crimson developing, I think it could really be a quality feud...and instead of it being about who's ex wife is married to who now, it's about purely who's the tougher dude with a streak history vs. a current streak. I like it. I like drama feuds, but this is different.

Last week when Sangrieto (spelling?) wrestled, he pulled up his mask and smiled at the camera...I think I mentioned this. I think this is going to tie into another angle, but I won't spoil who's under the mask unless someone asks specifically. Interesting stuff, though, and I love that dude's finisher (springboard RKO off of the ropes).

And anything involving Mick Foley on the mic is pretty freaking entertaining.

Eric Bischoff is a peace of crap if he takes out the X-Division, the X-Divison is what made TNA what it is today or excuse me "IMPACT" what it is today. Eric Bischoff needs to GTFO of IMPACT

Anderson/Sting has the potential to be a fantastic feud if done right, and they did it right last night, to be sure!

I am upset that Easy E put himself in a match, as well as having Abyss take the X Div title... kind of upsetting as a fan, but if Russo wants to do it right, just make sure the X Div comes back around.

*spoilers below, turn back if you haven't wached Impact Wrestling yet!*

I definitely agree that they did Anderson/Sting right last night...I was confused at the beginning of the show because I thought that Sting was really going old school...It didn't require words, but Anderson made a huge statement.

Both Eric Bischoff putting himself in a match and having Abyss being the X-Division is a great way of telling the story that he wants to destroy the X-Division. I'm pretty certain that he'll be getting what comes to him, and that they'll make the Division rally together to get that belt off of Abyss - a guy who doesn't really deserve it. Putting it on someone like him is supposed to make you mad, haha, and it's a great way of continuing that "us vs. them" mentality with Kendrick and the X-Division facing Easy E. I'd really like to see this ending with BK taking the belt...having the prominence of a beginning of the show promo - which he did really well - is great for the guy. He deserves it, IMO.

I think this will lead all of the way up until Destination X. The X-Div will take back what is theirs and showcase their talents at a major PPV.
