OK I have Windows ME and the JPG icon is the same as "WordPad" icon and sometimes all my icons on my desktop and in certain folders change to the same icon but as far as the image icons go you do the following.......
1. right click on a picture or image that you know is a "Bmp" file
and a drop down menu will appear
2. point to and click on "Open With"
3. choose "Paint"
4. It should ask if you want all to open with this program you click yes
then apply then OK now you will see the real .Bmp icons

This probably doesn't help you much but I am trying anyway

Ok so your seeing things like Windows Live Messenger.txt

Simply change the .txt to an .exe that should teach those damn pilgrims!!

Only change the file extention, dont change the original name of the program, only thing you want to change is the .txt

Right click the icon whether it be a .txt icon or not, go to Properties and you'll see "Program Name.txt" in the General Tab, just change the ".txt" to ".exe" and that should be it. A Dialogue will pop up saying "If you change the file extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?" Just click Yes.

I have never heard of anything like this before.

I would of thought SiroV's solution would of worked. I ve been trying to do it in reverse and force my .exe to a .txt, it just wont allow it.

Can you goto your desktop, right click on the messenger icon, select properties and then copy paste the infomation in the target box into your next post.

It should look something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe"

Also click find target and see what that does?
and
manually follow the path to check there is a source file

I would also run any anti-virus & malware software you have and if you dont already have it install spybot s&d and run that as well it will detect any registry changes.
