Best of Rivals: Joe Montana, Steve Young, and the Inside Story behind the NFL's Greatest Quarterback Controversy

This is an audiobook that I have recently listened to. It was a very interesting book that discusses the dynamic between Steve Young and Joe Montana when they played for the 49ers together from 1987 to 1992. What happened was that Joe Montana had surgery on his back or spine after the 1986 season and there were legitimate questions about whether he would be as effective as he was before and therefore the 49ers traded for Young who was playing for the Buccaneers. However, Montana continued his career without a hitch and Young sat as the backup, but the thing was that Montana kept getting hurt and missed a game here and a game there and Young was effective in relief. So as Montana continued to play well, Young got more frustrating. The two would say all the right things in public, but there was definitely tension in there. It is interesting how the book talks about how Bill Walsh leveraged this to get the most out of the two quarterbacks. I'd encourage 49er and NFL fans to read or listen to the book.
