ATT Blocks 4chan /b/ Image Boards

"First they came for the pedophiles (porn viewers in general), and I did not speak out, because I was not a pedophile.
Then, they came for the pirates (file piracy), and I did not speak out because I was not a pirate.
Then they came for anonymous (internet rabblerousers), and I did not speak out because I was not anonymous.
Then they came for me (you), and there was no one left to speak out for me."

AT&T Blocks 4chan - Encyclopedia Dramatica

Not sure how many have heard about this, I'm going to try to keep this post as neutral as possible.

Personally, while I don't like the 4chan website, I support them in their plight. If ATT thinks they can police the 4chan image boards, they have to police everything else too. I'm telling you, I know websites NOT blocked by ATT that violate the constitution.

For those who don't get it, ATT is basically royally screwed no matter how it goes, regardless of what the circumstances are. This event, whether it's from ATT, 4chan, or God, is ATT's obituary come early.

Do the research yourself, it's impossible not to get the whole story by googling it.

Currently I'm multi-spamming ATT's online customer service chat system. It's not that I go to 4chan, but that I feel its censorship means many websites I use could potentially be censored as well. It always starts with a justified shot, before the entire thing escalates into a World Web War. Hopefully that popularizes dbxx's failed "WWW" slogan.

EDIT: Once their customer service department opens, I'll be using magic jack to spam RickRolled up their arses...

That's an insult to the Communists, Jews, unionist and Catholics.

In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up.
There's a BIG difference between banning child porn and exterminating a race of people.
Nice try.

He didn't come up with it. It's listed on the website he linked to.

Well, yes, because child porn is illegal, and is heavily prosecuted, in every state in the country. OTOH, that is precisely what gives ATT the right, and some would argue the moral responsibility, to take that very action.

If I wanted to go to 4chan or whatever it's called, I would just tell att to stick it. I'm going with another provider. I can't see how this even remotely classifies as free speech.

If someone can confirm this quote, that would be great.

Under the FCC’s Comcast/BitTorrent ruling, Internet Service Providers may only slow or cap connection speeds. They are not allowed to block any service or protocol on the internet. Here, 4chan as a web site appears to fall under an internet service, but it is also conforming to standard web page protocols. It appears AT&T does not have the legal right to block 4chan, only to cap customers who are “abusing” their access to the internet.

It's clear you've never been to 4chan.

I'm also pretty sure communists aren't a race.

It's not an archive of child porn, it's simply a portal where people can post whatever they want. So do some things get through? Yes, but the mods there do a great job of emptying out the bad stuff before it's up for more than a few moments. 4chan is basically a collective description of the human population and how low we can sink. Those who surf 4chan enjoy a freedom rarely seen in the world and because of that tend to take pleasure in bothering people and messing with them.

Banning 4chan makes a lot of sense, I mean hey, there's a lot of bad shit on there. However, 4chan is the tool here. This is a lot like the idiots who think banning firearms will stop gun crime. Any intelligent person knows that would never work, especially in the US which apparently has something called the "second amendment" which has something to do with guns. I forget.

I never have been there. From what I've read here, I doubt I ever will.

I don't have a problem with a private company deciding whether or not they want to provide service that includes access to specific websites.

Just as I don't have a problem with Wal*Mart deciding not to carry certain CD's.

It's AT&T's right as a company to decide what their services will include. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you don't have an alternative then guess what? Full unfiltered internet access is not a right. It never has been a right and it never should be. AT&T is well within their rights as a company.

What's next, taking McDonald's to court because they don't serve Pizza?

You've got it wrong, Brix.

4chan is not a "service". It would be like buying a magazine with certain words blacked out. You're buying a magazine and then the magazine editor is removing stuff from it. That's not right, especially in the quote that Storm brought up. It's not AT&T's job to censor or remove anything, their job is to provide a connection to the net end of story.
