Asia’s first female President, former Philippines first lady Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino, has died aged 76 from colon cancer.

Aquino, who led the people power revolution that ended the 20-year rule of late Philippines strongman Ferdinand Marcos, was the 11th and first female president of the Philippines, serving from 1986 to 1992 and repelled seven coup attempts in her six years in office.

Along with a string of international awards and honors, in 1984 Aquino was cited as one of 100 Women Who Shaped World History and in 1986 was Time’s Woman of the year as well as a Nobel Peace Prize nominee.

As some of you know, I grew up in Manila and I've witnessed first hand the historical moments involving Aquino, from the moment her husband was assassinated, to the snap elections by Marcos, the People Power revolution, the ousting of the Marcoses, the coup attempts, etc.

She also went to the same church where I used to sing so I've had the honor to personally meet her. She may not be one of the best politicians in the country but she surely has been one of the most inspiring, even outside of the country.

side note: I'm glad July is over tomorrow. I feel like I've been hearing of deaths of famous people or friends/family of my entourage this month, more than the other months.
