Is this something that's fairly easy for a person to do on their own, or is it something best left to the professionals?

I usually don't mess with freon, but thats just me. What year is your car? In most cases older cars you have to have some kind of permit to buy freon, otherwise you cant buy it. Any newer car you can just go down to your local autoparts store and they will hook you up.

Actually it's pretty simple. You can buy a kit at any auto store. You just hook it up and fill it with freon. Also if you buy it there a store employee would probably help you do it in the parking lot if you ask them.
