Access is a database tool bundled with Microsoft Office software. Access is a very powerful database software. Though access one can develop tables, forms, queries and report. One can write macros too in Access.

I personally prefer MySQL. Basically, anything over Microsoft's attempt to One-Up other companies.

I have to say, I haven't found Access particularly "simple for the beginner," personally. Most of the things people do with Access, I can do with php and MySQL.

I feel both have their own customer base. I also prefer mySQL. But I think to pick up fast Access is much easier to start with. One with a knowledge of Access can try going for mySQL.
